Understanding Emotional Dysregulation in Children: Signs Every Parent Should Know and How West Houston Counseling Center Can Help

For many parents, navigating their child’s emotional ups and downs can be difficult, especially when those emotions seem to overwhelm the child. Emotional dysregulation, or difficulty managing emotions, is common in children and can affect their behavior, social interactions, and well-being. Recognizing the signs of emotional dysregulation is the first step to helping children gain the tools they need to cope. West Houston Counseling Center offers a specialized, four-phase approach to support children and families.

Key Signs of Emotional Dysregulation in Children

Children with emotional dysregulation often struggle with several notable signs:

1. Difficulty Transitioning

Shifts in routine, like moving from playtime to dinnertime or from home to school, can lead to resistance, anxiety, or anger.

2. Low Frustration Tolerance.

When a task becomes difficult or doesn’t go as planned, these children may quickly become frustrated, often reacting with impatience or outbursts.

3. Intense Meltdowns.

Overwhelming feelings can result in intense meltdowns where the child struggles to regain control, often in response to what may seem like minor triggers.

4. Behavioral Issues.

These children may engage in challenging behaviors, like defiance or aggression, as they try to cope with intense emotions they cannot manage effectively.

5. Issues with Boredom.

Children with emotional dysregulation may quickly feel bored when not actively engaged, leading to irritability or disruptive behavior. This is because they have “race car brains with curvy breaks”.  Their brains are so fast that it’s hard for them to slow down. Activities that may seem easy to us can be highly challenging. Tedious tasks like brushing their teeth, doing homework, etc. can create a drop-off effect from a fast brain to a slow activity that can increase irritability in these children.

6. Sensory Seeking.

Many children with emotional regulation issues may exhibit sensory-seeking behaviors, like constantly moving, fidgeting, or craving intense sensory input, as a way of self-soothing. Often this can be seen as impulsivity or acting out but these children are just trying to use sensory input to soothe their nervous system.

7. Irritability Before Bed or Upon Waking.

The transition to bedtime or the morning routine can be especially challenging for children, often resulting in irritability or difficulty calming down enough to sleep.

8. Demand Avoidance.

Children who struggle with an irritable nervous system or emotional dysregulation often struggle with following requests and have difficulty doing tasks that are asked of them. It may feel like your child is being difficult or acting up because they have to do things they don’t want to do, but they often struggle with these tasks because their nervous system already sits at a 5 on a 1-10 scale (with 10 being highly irritable). So, when parents ask them to do something that’s unpleasant they can quickly get to a 10.

How West Houston Counseling Center Can Help: Our Four-Phase Approach

At West Houston Counseling Center, we understand that emotional dysregulation can affect all aspects of a child’s life. Our team of child therapists uses a structured, four-phase approach to help children learn to regulate their emotions, manage frustration, and grow in self-confidence. Here’s how each phase of our approach works:

Phase 1: Regulating the Nervous and Sensory Systems

In this initial phase, we focus on stabilizing the child’s nervous and sensory systems, creating a strong foundation for emotional regulation. Neurofeedback LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) and modulation work are used to help the brain find balance, reduce hyperactivity, and manage stress. This phase is especially helpful for children who experience sensory-seeking behaviors, as it promotes calmness and reduces overstimulation.

Phase 2: Increasing Distress Tolerance

In this phase, we introduce skills to help children tolerate distress, especially around irritability and frustration. Techniques such as mindfulness, grounding exercises, and emotion labeling are taught to help children pause and consider their feelings before reacting. By learning to manage and process frustration, children gradually build resilience, reducing the frequency and intensity of meltdowns.

Phase 3: Developing a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is essential for emotional and mental well-being. In this phase, we encourage children to approach challenges with a positive outlook, helping them see setbacks as opportunities for learning rather than as failures. This mindset shift can be particularly transformative for children who previously reacted to challenges with frustration or avoidance.

Phase 4: Increasing Behavior Change and Sense of Self

Finally, we help children consolidate what they’ve learned and apply it to everyday situations. This phase emphasizes behavior change by encouraging self-reflection, problem-solving, and self-awareness. Children gain a stronger sense of self, learning to express their needs in healthy ways and feeling more confident in their ability to handle their emotions and interactions with others.
